In fair Verona, where we lay our scene…

Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge, break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

Pretty much sums up our side trip to Verona, as we did battle whether to see forts churches and bars, or Juliet’s balcony and Romeo’s cod-piece.  In the end we compromised and saw forts churches and bars, and then I left Dan to her own devices.  We wandered a beautiful city, said hello to the Pontiff, and enjoyed some hours in the sunshine together, and apart.

Tis thee Olde Shite

Maiden fair and her Romeo eye the rooftops of far Verona

Juliet’s house is down there, middle on the left with the missing tile near the chimney

Another church.  One of 743 in Verona.  Gilly, I’ll PM you the photos of the other 742.

Ethel’s balcony is up on the left.  No one wrote a play about Ethel.

The easy way to the palace.  We took it.

Anon sir, anon.  The American instagrammers are without!

Pope Franky was putting on a show inside

Indian Romeo on Juliet’s Balcony. Must’ve been dropping Uber Eats to Nursey.

The Pontiff called into Verona to say hi to us this arvo as well.  Great to see Franky still going strong.  He gave me the thumbs up as he went by. Sorry for the shit video, not my forte, and the editors effort was just as bad.  We were busy waving to the great man.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings.
The sun for sorrow will not show his head.
Go hence to have more talk of these sad things.
Some shall be pardoned, and some punishèd.
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

Rumour had it Shakespeare never came to Verona.  His ending above suggests this is true, because no one could come to this beautiful city and write that ending.  Had Shakespeare been in Verona his ending would have been more like the ending to Notting Hill.  Of course, if he did, we would no longer remember the bard today…

  1. Ok, seeing the pope drive by officially beats our king and Queen encounter last year. Did you know he was going to be there or was it a lucky accident?

    1. I said it rivalled your king and queen sighting. A lucky accident. ( he must have known we’d be in town)
